The Odyssey of Self-Discovery: On Becoming A Leader explores the intersection between the discovery of your leadership values and how you can align your values and your strengths with organization objectives.

My name is Xinjin Zhao and I am the author of The Odyssey of Self-Discovery: On Becoming A Leader. I wrote this book because too many aspiring leaders struggle to maximize their leadership potentials either due to their own perceptions of what leadership really means or misalignment with organizational expectation vs. their own individual leadership value and purpose.

This book includes stories and insights from thought leaders, interviews with many executives, as well as my own experiences of triumph and struggle as a global business executive. More importantly, I have had the amazing support from a community of over a quarter million followers of my LinkedIn leadership blogs who have provided constant inspiration to the book.

My hope is that The Odyssey of Self-Discovery: On Becoming A Leader will inspire you to take ownership of your own leadership development approach, apply the key principles described in the book to crystallize your own leadership purpose, chart your own unique path, and control your own destiny. Only you can tell your own leadership story.

You will love this book if you have been reading my LinkedIn leadership blogs. The Odyssey of Self-Discovery is a non-fiction book that speaks to early- to mid-career aspiring leaders who are looking at making a leap in maximizing their leadership potentials. The book can also be a useful guide for MBA students who are embarking on a leadership journey for the first time.

Story of My Book

The Odyssey of Self-Discovery: On Becoming A Leader

The first part of the book describes the foundation of leadership value, and how readers can develop self-awareness to explore their own inner voices and better connect their values with organizational objectives.

The second part of the book describes what makes great leaders, and how they create organization vision, make decisions, and foster environments which enable people to find the best way to achieve organizational objectives.

The third part explores how some of the leadership frameworks outlined in the book can be applied in five different use cases.

The book concludes with the summary of a leadership survey I conducted as part of the book including a list of common mistakes and a practical guide for aspiring leaders who want to translate the concepts in this book into action.

Leadership is a Responsibility

If you are aspired to be a leader, you should realize that, on the one hand, leaders manifest of the quality of responsible behavior through a willingness to take charge and not shirk from decisions, especially during difficult time. Finding Your Own Power

Knowing ourselves better is important but knowing how we are being perceived by others is often the more important half of self awareness. Some might think that I know who I am and I do not care much about how others think about me. It is not wrong to think that we should figure out what is right and not care what other people think. However, in the context of leadership development and self awareness, how you are being perceived by others can have impactful consequence regardless whether or not the perception accurately reflects our true identity. The perception can and will affect ones effectiveness in the organization. People who know how others see them are more skilled at showing empathy and taking others’ perspectives into their decision making, or in Rose’s case, leverage that awareness of intensity as her strength.

Picasso vs. Van Gogh

Leaderships or success mean different things to different people. Many view it as a necessary skillset to enable their career success. However, career success means very different things for different people. As a result, the required leadership characters are also very different. Fundamentally one needs to know why you are interested in leadership and what is the purpose of leadership or why do you want to be a leader. Do you want to be a leader as an enabler for you to pursue what you want to pursue or do you just want to be a leader because that is the way for career success? Do you want to be a leader so that you can have more impact on the mission? Would being a leader make you happy and enjoy life more? At some point in our lives, we find out why we are here. I believe that we all have a function, a purpose, a job to do in this life. Some have developed their purpose and value early through their upbringing, others have to struggle through a self discovery journey.
